Glenn Yungnickel, 24, studied at Auckland University of Technology

His collection – In the Red

This collection explores the use of colour within the framework of creating a contemporary menswear collection.

Glenn’s aim was to develop a menswear collection which challenges the monochromatic colour palette which is typically adopted by many menswear designers. It was his intention to design a casual range of five outfits (20 garments) that will enhance a challenging palette.

“The successful development of a jacket silhouette, for this collection, is of particular significance; and as is creating challenge in the area of colour.

“I explored a number of different ways of using colour for developing my collection. Tones of red stood out as being the colour to explore and develop. Red was a forecasting colour for the season and also, in this time of financial crisis, we are in the red, not the black. Tones of red also have many different meanings from intense orange red to subdued dusty pink.

“By experimenting with fabric dying, one colour was chosen to dye the whole collection. By doing this, the fabric plays an important role in dictating the different tones of red throughout each garment. Every fabric is dyed differently, creating the tones of red in the collection.”
