Her collection – Cut to Last
“The initial inspiration for my Cut to Last womenswear collection was tribal scarification. Looking at how different tribes cut their skin. How they rub hot ash into the wound during the healing process, leaving behind raised, lumpy scars. From here, I experimented with fabric manipulation, scorching and cutting into different thicknesses of fabric. Using different scarification patterns, I created designs that played about with proportion and scale of these patterns and began placing them on different areas of the body.”
“My seam patterns have come from the placement of lines of scarification around the body. I experimented on the stand with different seam placements. The seam that runs throughout my collection is a low underarm sea, creating a low armhole with a curved silhouette. My seams are sewn so that the edges are left raw. By sewing two raw edges over the top of each other, it creates a raised lumpy seam mirroring the look of scars. I have used some of my laser cut design as trims also, by folding them over on themselves, to create a rigid, interesting edge for detailing. My colour palette is of different tonal greys with navy blue.”
